A secret primer from the teachers union on how to thwart parents and stop charter schools

Almost without fail, teachers unions respond to school reform drives by declaring their commitment to improving education collaboratively with parents and community leaders.

In one example, the United Federation of Teachers used just such an argument in fighting in the courts of public opinion and law to block the city from closing 22 failing schools.

Now, though, an internal report produced by the political shop of the Connecticut chapter of the American Federation of Teachers reveals the cynical falsity of the labor leaders' claims to have the best interests of students at heart.

Posted briefly on an AFT website, the document celebrated the weakening of parent-trigger legislation in Connecticut. A blogger saved the post for us to read.

A trigger law lets parents of kids in a persistently failing school vote to turn it into a charter school. Such a measure, on the books in California, threatens the jobs of unionized teachers.

When the idea surfaced in Connecticut, the AFT swung into action by lobbying the legislature to bottle up the bill in committee. This was described as "Plan A: Kill Mode." It failed.

Then the AFT went to "Plan B: Engage the Opposition," or, in honest terms, pretend to seek common ground by talking while making sure that "parent-trigger advocates ... were not at the table" in key meetings.

Then the union helped to write legislation that would create "advisory groups" with parent representation, essentially claiming to embrace an idea it opposed.

The AFT document bluntly admitted: Connecticut's parent committees are "advisory only and have no governing authority." The bill passed.

The union learned lessons, according to the presentation: The "absence of charter school and parent groups from the table" during negotiations was very helpful. And "toxic dialogue from ... parent trigger advocates" was damaging.

AFT boss Randi Weingarten, a former UFT president, was aware of how, her, toxic pulling back the curtain could be. She told a schools blog: "We are proud of the work in Connecticut, but disagree with the wording and what the wording ... represented."

SEXY MODEL FINDS GOD AND SELF

Wearing a pleated blue skirt, black high heels and a flashy ring on her right hand, Leah Darrow doesn't hide her love for fashion.
Former America's Next Top Model contestant, Leah Darrow, speaks to students at a college in Columbus, Ohio about her path through life and how it has affected her Christian faith. She enjoyed fashion so much that it lead her to become a contestant on the reality TV show "America's Next Top Model," and later, a career in the industry.
She was successful, earning up to $16,000 a day on some fashion shoots. But an incident during one particular shoot for an international magazine changed her life.
Her journey is one of faith, love and forgiveness of self.
Raised a Christian, Darrow never shied away from her religion, but admits that she didn't always live her life according to her faith. Those transgressions stayed with her and developed into a self-hate.
"Sometimes you are your own worst enemy because you are reminding yourself over and over and over" of the past, Darrow said.
Those decisions, she said, included abusing her body through illicit relationships in high school and college and drinking.
"I was Christian and told everyone I was Christian. But my actions were definitely not Christian.
Darrow said she knew of God's mercy and forgiveness, but never really believed in it. So she continued on her path that revolved around the material world as she pursued a modeling career in New York. It wasn't until that magazine photo shoot that she began to have a conversion experience.
The people in charge wanted her to give a sexy and sultry look wearing skimpy outfits. During the photography session, there was an instant when she said everything changed. Describing it as a spiritual and mystical moment, it hit her that she was nothing more than a puppet.
"I realized in that moment that nobody in this industry really does care at all about me. They were using me like I used people," she said.
She quit on the spot and left the modeling profession. She called her dad, who was living in St. Louis, to come pick her up in New York and take her home.
"I had no idea what I had just done. I had just ended my career. No more $8,000 checks. No more money. No more fame. No more red carpet events. No more celebrities."
Those were all things she thought would make her happy, but they came at a cost. She felt like she was losing her soul.
Her conversion didn't happen as soon as her dad picked her up. Just wanting change wasn't enough.
"In my mind I had this little fairy-ish girl who just twirls and says, ‘I've changed,' and then it's done. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that," Darrow said.
Her dad pushed her to go to church. It was then that she said she received mercy and forgiveness and felt at peace. That feeling lead her to pledge to never again believe the lies of our culture that lead her on the path that she was on before.
She said she never really understood what love meant and was looking for it in ways of the world. But now she defines love as desiring the greatest good for God.
"If you really love someone you're not taking them to the brink of sin. If you really love someone you are not asking them to engage in something that will hurt you and them," Darrow said.
After returning home to St. Louis, Darrow began working with Catholic Answers, a lay-run apostolate organization. It is a long way from the fashion runways, but a change that she said others can take, too.
"Never let anyone tell you that you can not change. Never let anyone tell you that you can not do something better than what you are doing right now," she said.

NO HATS FOR MEN; VEILS FOR WOMEN

First I am going to give you the Bible verse that ardent feminists have expunged from public readings.

Here it is:1 Corinthians 11:1-17:

“Be imitators of me as I am of Christ. I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you. But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her husband and the head of Christ is God. Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but any women who prays and prophesies with her head un-veiled dishonors her head-it is the same as if she were shaven. For if a women will not veil herself, then she should cut her hair off, but if it is disgraceful for a women to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil. For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but a women is the glory of man. (For man was not made from women, but women from man. Neither was man created for women, but women created for man. That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels. Nevertheless, in the women is not independent of man nor man of women; for as woman was made from man now man is born from woman. And all things are from God. Judge for yourselves; Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear his hair long is degrading to him, but is a woman has long hair it is her pride. For her hair is given to her for a covering. If one is disposed to be contentious. We recognize no other practice, nor do the churches of God.”

It might sound a bit harsh; however, the point Saint Paul is making not the often stated opinion that he dislikes women. The passage is not just to women. He addresses the men as well.

The chapter in Corinthians is a guide to the young church. The chapter begins with, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.”

And then the Apostle explains about men not covering their heads and women covering theirs. He goes on into the Christian service and states “Whoever therefore eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in a unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and soul of the Lord.”

In order to better understand why St. Paul is so adamant about men’s hats and women’s veils, one needs to understand the purpose of the Epistle.

“The Church uses veils in liturgy and worship to draw attention to the mystery present. Altar veils, chalice veils, humeral veils etc. are all pointing to something important – that there are transcendent realities present. A woman’s femininity is a holy mystery, and something not to be grasped at. The veil speaks of this. Plus, a woman represents in a special way the Bride of Christ – The Church – by wearing the veil. It reveals to all present that Christ seeks to wed himself to us in the Wedding Feast of the Lamb. Formal clothing on the part of the minister speak the inverse. He is dressed for the wedding banquet.”

Now, think of what was veiled in the Old Testament — the Holy of Holies!

…The Ark of the Old Covenant was kept in the veiled Holy of Holies. And at the supper of the Lord, what is kept veiled until the right time? The Cup — the vessel that holds the Precious Blood! The vessels of life are veiled because they are holy!

The woman is holy.

ADULT PRONOGRAPHY HARMS CHILDREN TOO.

Protecting children from sexual exploitation is a priority for many government agencies and private bodies today, but not enough is being done to deal with the threat to children from the dangers of adult pornography.

A non-profit organization based in New York City, published a study in September titled, "How Adult Pornography Contributes To Sexual Exploitation of Children." Government agencies and private groups are ignoring the consequences of what they term an "explosion" of hardcore adult pornography on the Internet and elsewhere.

Adult porn is a menace for children in a number of ways, the report contends:

-- Perpetrators use adult pornography to groom their victims;

-- For many perpetrators there is a progression from viewing adult pornography to viewing child pornography;

-- Men act out with child prostitutes what they view in adult pornography, and pimps use adult pornography to instruct child prostitutes;

-- Children imitate behavior they view in adult pornography with other children;

-- Addiction to adult pornography destroys marriages, and children raised in one-parent households are more likely to be sexually exploited.

Grooming
The report's author, Robert Peters, president of Morality in Media, explains that a couple of decades ago, in his research into court cases, he came across multiple examples of situations involving sexual exploitation of children in which an adult defendant had shown or given adult pornography to the child victim as part of the grooming process.

The use of adult pornography by predators to arouse and desensitize their child victims is one way in which adult pornography contributes to harm.

More than 100 pages of excerpts from news articles and court cases that refer to how a perpetrator showed or gave pornography to a child or forced the child to watch it.

Men who are addicted to pornography require more explicit and deviant kinds of sexual material as time goes on, just as is the case with those afflicted with drug addictions. Thus, over time there is an increasing need for more of the stimulant to get the same initial effect.

There is an increasing tendency to act out sexually the behaviors viewed in the pornography. So users of pornography are not only passive consumers, but tend to act out the behaviors seen.

Media threats
When it comes to children themselves, if a child were to walk into an adult bookstore, then he would be told to leave, as it is against the law to sell pornography to children in the physical world.

By contrast, if that same child were to "click" to most commercial Web sites that distribute adult pornography, it is possible to view hardcore adult pornography free of charge, and without restriction.

Most children can still access the Internet outside the home or by means of mobile devices. All it takes is one child in a group of friends to have unrestricted access to the Internet for all to have access.

One of the conclusions of the report is a request that churches and other religious organizations do more to confront the adult pornography problem. Pornography is a problem not only for many who do not attend religious service, but also for those of all ages who do attend.

Family life
The possibility to access pornography through computers and phones has removed the so-called barrier to entry, that is, the embarrassment of a visit to a sex shop to buy a magazine or video.

There is a fair proportion of women who see their husband’s porn use as an infidelity," Even when he is being honest about it, some women see porn use to be a kind of adultery.

The link between the multibillion-dollar porn industry and sexual appetite has become like the relationship between super-size portions and obesity.

"The ubiquity of sexual images does not free the power of Eros, but dilutes it."

****He observed that sexual assaults are now committed by younger assailants against younger victims. Moreover, a survey he carried out among students at the University of Ottawa in Canada found that the average age at which they first looked at pornography was 13. Among those whose parents kept pornography in the home, the age was lower, between 10 and 11, he noted.

Poulin also cited a survey showing that one in five men aged 22-23 admitted being sexually attracted to 13-year-old girls. "This is not a trivial trend," he said.

Healthy environment

Benedict XVI addressed the issue of pornography in his April 16 address to American bishops during his visit to the United States last year.

"Children deserve to grow up with a healthy understanding of sexuality and its proper place in human relationships," he recommended.. "They should be spared the degrading manifestations and the crude manipulation of sexuality so prevalent today."

Children have a right to be educated in authentic moral values that are based on the dignity of the human person, the Pontiff continued.

"What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today?" he questioned.

To deal with this problem the Pope spoke of the need to urgently assess the values that are guiding society today. If we really care about young people we will all recognize our responsibility to promote and live by authentic moral values, which will enable all people to flourish, he concluded.

A timely reminder of the dangers of turning a blind eye to a problem that too often is ignored.

EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS FLUNK BIG

It has been too long a time coming, but now one of the most prominent firms conducting embryonic stem cell research has decided to abandon the field altogether.

Geron Corporation was the big hope for embryonic-stem-cell research. After years of promises, its first-ever human trial using an embryonic-stem-cell-derived product for acute spinal-cord injury made huge headlines internationally. But now, the Washington Post is reporting that Geron has abandoned the field altogether.

This is an atom bomb of a story that will have a serious effect on the entire regenerative medical sector. And it should embarrass the critics of President Bush; the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, which bragged about its part in funding a scientist involved in the research; and, perhaps most of all, the fawning media that have acted as press agent for both the field generally, and Geron specifically.
